They took it for a "test drive" Wednesday, and parked it. Today I heard this racket outside the house and popped my head out. A road mobile crane from Wales Crane & Rigging out of Woodway, TX was setting up their 165 ton lifter for "a pick". According to their website, this is the largest road mobile lifter in Central Texas Haulage was by State Tractor out of Kansas City, KS. Whatever is defective / inoperable with the Tamper cannot be fixed in the field, so it is getting shipped to a repair facility. The machine weights a paltry 70,000 pounds (35 tons), so the pick and set was easy work for the lifter. The low boy hauler ran about 30 minutes late. due to the orientation of the access road and tracks, the Tamper had to be picked up, rotated, swung then put down. It was a slow ballet with the tamper in the air, and two guys with tag lines rotating the machine 180 degrees for the set down. All in all, it took about an hour to set the outriggers, transfer the counterweights from the support truck to the crane, lift and anchor the counterweights in place, extend the boom, rig the lifting cables to the tamper, and pick, rotate and place on the low boy. 2 riggers, 1 crane operator, 1 BNSF roving mechanic, 1 lowboy driver and 1 lunatic taking pictures of the process.
