I also had it on good information, TSRR was going to be fire up and operate #30 (Baldwin 2-8-0, built 1917, c/n 46491, ex-Tremont & Gulf RR) on the westbound return to Palestine.
T&P #316 [4-6-0 A. L. Cooke; c/n 26142, built: 1901] and ATSF #1316 [4-6-2, Baldwin, c/n 37332, built December 1911, rebuilt March 1922] were positioned on the west leg of the Palestine Wye for the event. Weather was sucky, with overcast mist most of the day.
Truth be told, Deb and I were given the opportunity to ride in the cab of the #126 [EMD FP9, built May 1958, ex-VIA 6302, nee-CN 6533], of which I did not hesitate. Deb didn’t want to ride in the cab, so I deserted her in one of the open air coaches (under the watchful eye of the crew for that car!) to ride shotgun with the great Joe LoGiudice, engineer (instructor) extraordinaire. This trip was actually more about seeing him for Christmas and getting away from the house for a couple of hours than actually railfanning; as I'm his only friend in Texas; nay, make that his only friend (if you know Joe personally, you know why this is - LOL!)
Also, this would be my first experience of the interior much less a ride of a covered wagon. It’s also nice to know that 320 pounds of middle-age spread, can negotiate the vertical climb up and down without a hitch. The cab was rather spacious, much to my surprise. The ride was pleasurable to say the least and over way too soon.
