Listening to the scanner earlier that morning; I overheard the dispatcher saying three “high and wides” in Teague Yard were getting readied to come south. So, I waited patiently all day until I heard the 173.5 Defect Detector sing out, and moseyed out to the front yard with camera in hand. The train slowly comes out from behind the trees at the end of my road and only thing I see of interest is the second unit was an “even thousand” unit: #5000, a standard cab trailing and a “common” Komatsu mine dump chassis for export as first load. No high and wide- at least not one in my book of definitions. The train stops right in front of the house, so I sidle over to engineer’s side of the locomotive to a waiting face in an open window. After our exchange of pleasantries; I get the lowdown - the Komatsu chassis are considered high and wide. I said incredulously to the engineer, “That’s oversize???” He says “Yeah…” to which I reply, I’m going back inside!” He laughed and I came inside. I was hoping for wind turbine blades, refinery pressure vessel; a Schnable car, or some such truly oversize object. No such luck.
